There is a misconception that members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church keep to themselves and even that they are exclusive. Allan and Virginia have lived next to Brethren families in Lithgow, on the edge of Australia’s Blue Mountains, for decades, and they can give you the inside scoop 🌿🌲 🍂 When it comes to their neighbourhood, they say Brethren women and Brethren men are friendly, generous, community-minded… and excellent gardeners.

Lithgow local Frank has been working and living alongside members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church for more than two decades, and he kindly describes them as “Lithgow’s greatest asset”. He said Brethren women and Brethren men have been great to do business with, and in his experience he has witnessed the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church values in action when it comes to charity and investing in the local community and economy.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. You may have heard us incorrectly referred to as the Exclusive Brethren – but that’s not our name and it’s not how we live. Brethren women and men are active members of the community and will always take time to be good neighbours. Maybe you’d like to know more about the Brethren faith – or maybe you’ve wondered what the Brethren rules are… whatever questions you have, you can find the answers at our website [https://www.plymouthbrethrenchristianchurch.org/] – or you can ask our neighbours! Like Saryu, Neil and Nick, who all live next door to the Brethren in Australia, who took the time to share their experiences.

Many small gestures of neighbourly care and kindness add up over time to equate to something big – a shared sense of community values. Subba has lived next to members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church in Sydney for four years – and he’s given his neighbours a perfect score! 💯

No better neighbours – you better believe it! ❤️ 🫶 Angela and her husband have been living next door to Plymouth Brethren Christian Church members in South Australia for five years and she reckons you couldn’t ask for better neighbours.

n the lead up to ANZAC Day on 25 April, a day to commemorate all Australian and New Zealand men and women who have served their countries, we are sharing the stories of Plymouth Brethren Christian Church members who have served in conflicts across the globe and throughout history. This is a video from 2013, featuring Australian brothers Alan and Jack Urquhart. They served in World War II, tending to the sick and wounded soldiers in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. They did everything they could to help while remaining true to their beliefs.

Sometimes neighbours end up sharing more than the same street address. Good neighbours share the same values – the best neighbours share memories and milestones. Richard and Tanya have lived next door to members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church for 18 years in the NSW city of Wagga Wagga, Australia and say they’ve come to feel like part of the extended family.
